Description of Duties

This position is responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of a Type I-A Water Treatment Plant* containing facilities for filtration with pre-treatment or a chemical treatment process.  Work requires regular inspection of various areas within the treatment plant and offsite locations including remote facilities, booster pumping stations, tanks and reservoirs.  Employees are required to ascend ladders or stairs and enter confined or restricted spaces including subgrade facilities as well as maneuver or work in tight quarters around machinery and work a variety of work schedules including rotating shifts at multiple locations.  This position differs from that of a Senior Water Treatment Plant Operator-Type A Plant in level and complexity of assignments. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator Type A Plant or other higher-level staff member. 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam:

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

  1. One (1) year paid full‑time or its part-time equivalent** experience in the operation of a Type I-A Water Treatment Plant*; OR,
  2. Possession of a Grade II-A Water Treatment Plant* Operator’s license issued by the New York State Department of Health under the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code.

*this position works at a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration designed to treat over 2.5 million gallons per day (MGD) and is classified as a Type I-A Plant.

Note:Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications under section (B) must submit copy of their license at the time of application.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a Grade II-A Treatment Plant Operator’s license issued by the New York State Department of Health under the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code at the time of appointment.

If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.
