The Board of Health advises the County Executive on matters relating to public health policy and health and medical concerns of the County of Monroe.
The Board advises the Commissioner of Health in the various program areas in matters relating to priority setting, programming and fiscal aspects of annual budget plans to be submitted of the County of Monroe and direct special inquiry to program functions when needed in response to the Board’s oversight function to maintain the quality and integrity of public health programming.
The Board of Health of the County of Monroe consists of eleven (11) members, at least one (1) of whom shall be a physician licensed to practice in the State of New York, one (1) of whom shall be a nurse licensed to practice in the State of New York, one (1) of whom shall be a member of the County Legislature, one (1) of whom shall be a member of the Council of the City of Rochester recommended by the President of the Council and one (1) of whom shall be a representative of the City of Rochester recommended by the Mayor of the City of Rochester. The members of the Board of Health shall be residents of the County of Monroe. The members of Board of Health are appointed by the County Executive with the approval of the County Legislature. The Medical Society of the County of Monroe and the Genesee Valley Nurses Association may submit to the County Executive a list of physicians and nurses, respectively, from which the County Executive may choose the physician and nurse members of the Board of Health.
The Monroe County Board of Health is currently in search of an “at large” member. At-large members are chosen to represent the general public, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives and interests are reflected in the membership of the Board. Unlike members who represent specific professional groups (e.g., physicians, nurses), at-large members are not tied to a particular constituency. At-large members play a crucial role in the Board’s decision-making processes, advising the Public Health Commissioner on the development of Monroe County public health policies and programs. The inclusion of at-large members helps to ensure that the Board’s decisions are informed by a wide range of perspectives and experiences, promoting a more inclusive and effective public health system.
Please find a Board of Health Fact Sheet here for more information about Board members’ responsibilities and time commitment. If you are interested in joining the Board, please send a letter of interest and current resume to [email protected].
