Description of Duties

This is a technical position involving both field and laboratory/shop assignments in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic traffic equipment.  The employee will learn to drive medium and heavy trucks, as well as operate heavy equipment.  The employee will be required to obtain a New York State Learner’s Permit for a Class *B* Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of appointment, and a New York State Class *B* CDL within the first twelve (12) months of appointment, with the employing agency providing sufficient training and road time to obtain the license.  Employees who do not successfully obtain a New York State Learner’s Permit for a Class *B* Commercial Driver’s License within the first six (6) months of appointment, and a Class *B* Commercial Driver’s License within the first twelve (12) months of appointment will be removed from the position.  Work is performed under a variety of conditions such as changing weather, confined spaces (manholes), and heights, and involves shift work.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of an Electronic Foreman or other higher-level staff member.  Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering Technology, Electronic Technology, or a closely related field; OR,
  2. Graduation with an Electronics Technology Certification, plus six (6) months paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in electronic technology**; OR
  3. One (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in electronic technology**; OR
  4. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.

**Electronic technology experience must include troubleshooting and repair to the component level of digital and analog electronics circuits and a variety of electronic test equipment including oscilloscopes, Digital Volt Meter (DVMs), spectrum analyzers, (Time Domain Reflectometer (TDRs), and Radio Frequency (RF) signal level meters or the equivalent.

NOTE:  Electronic board assembly work or cabinet/chassis wiring work will not be counted towards experience for this position.  Industrial or residential electrical work will also not count as acceptable experience.
