Description of Duties

This is a supervisory position responsible for assisting the Director in the buildings and grounds program of an agency or school district.  This employee assigns, supervises and inspects the building maintenance, repair and minor consturction work performed by a large staff.  Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Buildings and Grounds.  Direct supervision is exercised over custodial cleaning and maintenance personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from a high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, plus two (2) years of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience in building maintenance, grounds maintenance or as a skilled workman in one of the building trades, which shall have included working supervision over a crew; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Construction Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, plus four (4) years of experience in building maintenance, grounds maintenance or as a skilled workman in one of the building trades, two (2) years of which shall have involved working supervision over a crew; OR
  3. Six (6) years of experience, two (2) years of which shall have involved working supervision over a crew.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.
