Description of Duties

This is a professional nursing position responsible for providing direct nursing services for students, including performing physical examinations, as it relates to the students’ performance in a general or special education program.  Duties involve determining individual health care needs and ensuring needs will be provided for in the students’ educational program.   The employee must be certified to practice in the specific specialty area or areas related to the work performed and the work performed must be in accordance with written practice agreements and protocols or collaborative relationships as set forth by the New York State Office of Professions.  The work is performed independently under the appropriate license in collaboration with a licensed Physician qualified in the specialty area.  The employee retains responsibility for the professional tasks performed within his/her scope of practice. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Director of Special Education, Executive Director of Student and Family Services, or other higher level staff member. Supervision of staff, such as a professional nursing staff, may be a responsibility of this position. 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam:

New York State certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in one or more of the following specialty areas:  Community Health, Family Health, Pediatrics, or School Health.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.

Special Requirements:

When prescribing medication is required

Successful completion of not less than three (3) semester hours or the equivalent in pharmacology in a nurse practitioner program registered by the New York State Education Department or a program determined by the New York State Education Department to be equivalent to a registered program at the time of appointment.

If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.
