Description of Duties

This is a professional nursing position responsible for providing primary health care services in a public health or other health related setting.  Duties involve diagnosing illnesses and recommending therapeutic and corrective measures which may include the prescription of drugs, devices, and immunizing agents.  The employee must be certified to practice in the specialty area or areas related to the work performed.  The work is performed independently or under a written practice agreement with a collaborating physician until the employee has completed 3,600 hours of experience as required by New York State Education Law.  The employee retains responsibility for the professional tasks performed within the scope of practice.  The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of an administrator or physician.  General supervision may be exercised over professional nursing staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam:

New York State certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the specialty area(s) related to the work performed.*

*Part 64 of the New York State Commissioner of Education Regulations defines the profession of Nurse Practitioners and includes the following specialty areas:  Acute Care, Adult Health, College Health, Community Health, Family Health, Gerontology, Holistic Care, Neonatology, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Palliative Care, Perinatology, Psychiatry, School Health, and Women’s Health.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.

Special Requirements:

If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.
