Description of Duties

This position is responsible for overseeing the purchases, inventory and usage of highway, bridge and culvert materials in related computer software. Duties include providing cost summaries and work activity reports based upon data entered. Duties also include tracking the movement of shared equipment to various job sites and ensuring regularly scheduled maintenance and necessary repairs. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a General Foreman or other higher-level staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience evaluating the needs of construction equipment repair, cost and materials and one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience utilizing computer databases*; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience in the operation of  heavy motor equipment such as pavement stripers, bulldozers, graders, or rollers and one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience utilizing computer databases*; OR,
  3. Three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience as defined in (A) or (B) above and (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience utilizing computer databases*; OR,
  4. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.

*NOTEExperience utilizing computer databases can be obtained as part of the required work experience listed in Section A or B above, or as part of work experience in another position.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid New York State Class *B* Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
