Description of Duties

This is a confidential senior level position in the Children's Service Unit of the Monroe County Law Department.  The employee assists attorneys in all aspects of child protective proceedings and trials and/or foster care hearings, including pre- and post-trial preparation, investigations and the appellate process and assumes direct responsibility for some legal matters.  This position differs from Trial Assistant by virtue of its independence and having more focus on conducting legal research.  The employee reports directly to and works under general supervision from one or more Deputy County Attorneys.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

  1. Satisfactory completion of an accredited paralegal training and instructional program and possession of a certificate of completion plus three (3) years paid full-time or it’s part-time equivalent* experience in drafting and composing legal documents in a law office setting; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree and completion of at least one (1) year of post graduate education in law, plus two (2) years paid full-time or it’s part-time equivalent* experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
  3. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree plus three (3) years paid full-time or it’s part-time experience* as defined in (A) above; OR,
  4. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree plus five (5) years paid full-time or it’s part-time equivalent* experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
  5. Seven (7) years paid full-time or it’s part-time equivalent* experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
  6. Any equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), (C), (D), and (E) above.
