Motor Equipment Operator Trainee
Description of Duties
This is a training position in which the employee will learn and master skilled maintenance and repair tasks and the safe and efficient operation of special and standard equipment over a twenty-four (24) month training period. The employee will learn to drive and operate small and large trucks, plus at least one (1) of the following: loader, packer, Link belt, roller, plow, backhoe, sweeper, Vactor, Jet Flusher, compressor, or Drott. The employee will be given various mechanical, maintenance and repair assignments over a twenty-four (24) month structured training period and will learn and master the skills to perform the required duties of the facilities. The employee will be required to obtain a New York State Learner’s Permit for a Class *B* Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within the minimum probationary period of the appointment, and a New York State Class *B* CDL within the first fifty-two (52) weeks of employment, with the employing agency providing sufficient training and road time to obtain the license (see note below). Upon successful completion of the training period, the employee will be promoted to Motor Equipment Operator. Depending on the particular work assignment, the employee may be required to be on twenty-four (24) hour call, seven (7) days per week, to work outdoors in all types of weather, to ascend and descend up to 100 feet, and to perform work in tight, confined spaces. Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher-level staff member. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class. Employees who do not successfully complete the twenty-four (24) month training period will be removed from the position. Employees who do not successfully obtain a New York State Learner’s Permit for a Class *B* CDL within the minimum probationary period of the appointment, and a New York State Class *B* CDL within the first fifty-two (52) weeks of employment will be removed from the position. Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma.
