Firefighter - Airport
Description of Duties
This position, located at the Greater Rochester International Airport, is responsible for the protection of life and property by responding to medical, structural and aircraft emergencies. Duties involve performing hazardous work around operating aircraft including controlling and extinguishing aircraft and structural fires, operation and maintenance of specialized equipment for firefighting, and application of air/crash/rescue techniques. The employee must be physically capable of performing difficult tasks in a high degree of heat, stress and noise and work rotating shifts. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief – Airport or Fire Captain – Airport while exercising considerable independent judgment when responding to emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, PLUS EITHER:
- Two (2) years full‑time or its part-time equivalent paid career experience in firefighting; OR,
- Two (2) years full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience in aircraft rescue for the military; OR,
- Four (4) years volunteer* firefighting experience and possession of ALL of the following: a Firefighter II certificate, an Apparatus Operator - Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) certificate, AND an Apparatus Operator- Pump Certificate ALL of which must be issued by either the New York State (NYS) Department of State, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Pro Board Fire Service Professional Qualifications System**; OR,
- Possession of a valid certificate** issued by the New York State Department of State Office of Fire Prevention and Control documenting completion of the Basic Fire Training Program established by the Minimum Standards for Firefighting Personnel (meets the requirements defined in the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations [NYCRR] 426 Minimum Standards for Career Firefighting Personnel); OR,
- An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C), above.
* Volunteer experience, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications, must be documented by submission of a signed letter from the chief/director of the participating district or department
stating the title(s) of the positions and months and years of volunteer service.
** Candidates must submit copies of certificates at the time of application.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at any level (see below) issued by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
EMT, EMT-Intermediate (AEMT-1), EMT-Critical Care (AEMT-CC), or EMT-Paramedic (AEMT-P).
Successful completion of a New York State Certified Fire Academy is required during the probationary period or otherwise be removed from the position.
