Description of Duties

This position is responsible for overseeing the security force assigned to patrol and enforce order on grounds and in buildings including inspection of building security systems and incident report activities.  The employee is responsible for conducting rounds of property ensuring proper security coverage.  General supervision is exercised over a staff of Security Workers and other security personnel.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of an administrative-level staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma; PLUS,

  1. Four (4) years of paid full‑time or its part‑time equivalent* experience in an occupation involved with the enforcement of peace and order such as a guard, police officer, forest ranger, armored vehicle guard, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) year college or university with an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or Police Science; PLUS two (2) years of experience as described in (A) above, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; OR,
  3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

Special Requirements:

Current registration as a Security Guard with the New York State Department of State.

If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.

Candidates may be required to pass a security check by the Monroe County Sheriff and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation of the New York State Police.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.
