Description of Duties

This position is responsible for providing non-clinical medical social work services to patients* and their families in a health care facility to assist them deal with medically related social and emotional problems.  Employees serve as members of interdisciplinary health care teams involving medicine, nursing, dietary, rehabilitation therapies and activities personnel in identifying needs and in formulating and implementing the restorative and discharge potential of patients.  The work is performed within prescribed guidelines with leeway permitted in determining the scope of social work services to be provided in helping patients adjust to their medical condition and to the environment of the facility.  Medical Caseworkers consult and cooperate with professionals in other disciplines and agencies to aid them in recognizing the significant social components of health care and understanding their impact on patients and their families.  Psychotherapy is not a responsibility of this position.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Medical Social Work Manager or other higher-level staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation with a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Social Work or other behavioral science** field except Criminal Justice and Anthropology;

**Behavioral science includes, but is not limited to, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, Gerontology, Human Behavior, Social Welfare, Vocational Rehabilitation.

NOTE:  Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.
