Description of Duties

This is a senior-level paraprofessional position responsible for performing and overseeing more complex paralegal tasks in the District Attorney's Office. Adheres to all office procedures and case management, guaranteeing reliability and consistency. The employee supervises, oversees work, and trains Criminal Law Assistants and Trial Assistants to ensure discovery is completed properly and conforms to the rules, guidelines, and standards for filing with the courts.  This position is responsible for assisting Assistant District Attorneys by reviewing cases, including procuring court documents, filing, preliminary case preparation, and notation of recommendations and legal action.  This position differs from Criminal Law Assistant by virtue of the more complex paralegal duties and the supervision of Criminal Law Assistants and Trial Assistants. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, the Chief District Attorney Administrator, an attorney, or other higher-level staff member. An Assistant District Attorney may provide direction on individual cases.  Direct supervision is exercised over Criminal Law Assistants.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation with a Bachelor's degree, plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience in paralegal or legal assistant work; OR,
  2. Graduation with an Associate’s degree, plus three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience in paralegal or legal assistant work; OR,
  3. Possession of a certificate of completion in Paralegal Studies*, or closely-related field, plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience in paralegal or legal assistant work; OR,
  4. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.

*Candidates qualifying under (C) above must submit a copy of certificate at time of application.
