Description of Duties

This is a security position at the Monroe County Department of Human Services located at a specialized secure detention (SSD) facility for pre-trial and post-sentencing detention of youth who are alleged or sentenced ‘adolescent offenders’.  The facility is part of the Monroe County Children’s Detention Center.  Duties involve providing increased safety and security at the Center including addressing fire prevention.  Duties are performed under stressful conditions and can include physically de-escalating volatile situations.  The facility operates on a 24/7 basis.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Children’s Center or other higher-level staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in a public safety, emergency services, criminal justice or closely related field one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*  experience in an occupation involved with the enforcement of peace and order such as guard, police officer, correction officer, forest ranger, or armored vehicle guard; OR,
  2. Three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience as described in (A) above; OR,
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

Special Requirements:

Current registration as a Security Guard with the New York State Department of State.

If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid New York State license to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
