Description of Duties

This position, located at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, is responsible for coordinating efforts to integrate diversity, equity (including but not limited to racial and gender equity), and inclusion principles throughout the Office.  Duties involve working closely with staff in the Jail, Police, Court, Civil and Staff Services bureaus to develop and lead an equity, diversity and inclusion framework that will produce a more effective recruitment program, establish on-going communication with staff, inmates and the community, and have an increased emphasis on utilizing restorative practices when dealing with the inmate population in an effort to decrease recidivism and increase success upon release.  Duties also involve assisting in creating and coordinating programs focused on jail ministries.  This position will partner closely with the Monroe County Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion staff to implement strategy and policy, creating a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Commander or other higher-level staff member. 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma PLUS either:

(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a multicultural education, ethnic studies, human resources, theology or behavioral or social science field, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience in human resources or strategic planning or program management with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion; or strategic planning or program management in a jail/prison environment; or in mediation, conflict resolution, affirmative action or equal employment opportunity activities for a public or private agency; OR,

(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in one of the fields mentioned in (A) above, plus four (4) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience in strategic planning or program management with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion; or strategic planning or program management in a jail/prison environment; or in mediation, conflict resolution, affirmative action or equal employment opportunity activities for a public or private agency; OR,

(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
